배은아의 상상의 사무실에 오신 것을 환영합니다.

상상의 사무실은 로쿠스 솔루스 Locus Solus 라는 프랑스 작가 레이몽 루셀(Raymond Roussel)의 소설 제목에서 시작되었다. ‘Locus Solus’는 라틴어로 ‘외딴(Solus) 곳(Locus)’을 뜻한다.

2022년 6월 로쿠스 솔루스 Locus Solus는 배은아의 기획을 주관하고 지원하는 배은아의 회사로 설립되었다. 설립과 동시에 로쿠스 솔루스는 고민에 빠졌다. 집에서 떨어져 나온다는 것이 회사를 설립하는 것보다 더 어려운 일 인줄이야. 사무실은 길 건너 집에서 겨우 한 걸음 떨어져 나왔지만 여전히 긴 복도를 통해 집과 연결된 작은 방일 뿐이었다. 내가 자청한 이 외딴곳은 나의 휴식처일까 피난처일까 아니면 유배지일까. 어쩌면 이 모두가 아닐지도 모른다.

로쿠스 솔루스 Locus Solus 는 현대미술 작가를 연구하고 프로젝트를 기획하고 수행하는 배은아의 사무실이다. 배은아는 불문학과 예술경영을 전공하고, 물질적 생산과 소비가 반복되는 현대사회의 과열된 구조 안에서 협력적이고 창의적인 태도로 지속 가능한 공동체로서 현대미술을 꿈꿔왔다. 주로 시각예술가 혹은 큐레이터와 협력하여 개념을 발전시키고 수행하며 전시, 페스티벌, 퍼포먼스, 강연, 출판 등을 완성시킨다. 삶과 예술의 태도를 고민하며 기획과 글쓰기를 해 온지 어느덧 20년이라는 시간이 지났다.

로쿠스 솔루스 Locus Solus 는 작가, 큐레이터 혹은 연구자들의 일시적 프로젝트로 운영되는 상상의 사무실이다. 누군가의 에이전시일 수도 있겠다. 누군가의 피난처 일 수도 있겠다. 누군가의 휴게소 일 수도 있겠다. 누군가의 공부방 일 수도 있겠다. 스스로 자유로워질 수 있는 어떤 상상의 장소.
그런데
정보와 지식의 시대에 사유가 일어나고 영감이 머무르는 상상의 사무실을 위한 ‘로쿠스 솔루스’라는 이름에 대한 문제가 생겼다. 프랑스 파리의 이본 람베르(Yvon Lambert)가 운영하는 라이브러리의 한 프로젝트가 이미 ‘로쿠스 솔루스’라는 이름으로 기획되고 있고, 한국 김윤철 작가의 스튜디오가 ‘스튜디오 로쿠스 솔루스’라는 이름으로 운영되고 있다.
그리하여
2024년 로쿠스 솔루스 Locus Solus의 부제였던 ‘상상의 사무실’을 끌어내어 로쿠스 솔루스의 곁에 두기로 했다. 배은아의 상상의 사무실의 문을 열며, 예술의 상상력을 믿고 기꺼이 우리의 실패와 교류가 가능한 로쿠스 솔루스가 되길 바란다.

Welcome to Enna Bae’s imaginary office.

The Imaginary Office began with the title of Locus Solus, a novel written by Raymond Roussel, a French author. The title means a place of solitary in Latin.
Huh,
In June 2022, Locus Solus was established as my own company, which oversees and supports new initiatives. Upon its establishment, Locus Solus met some troubles. Getting out of the house was more difficult than founding a company. The office was barely a step from home across the street, while still being a small room connected to the house through a long corridor. Is this remote place I volunteered for my rest? A shelter? Or an exile? Maybe (not) all of this.
Again,
Locus Solus is Enna Bae’s working place, for curating, producing, publishing and reseraching contemporary art project. Enna Bae majored in french litterature and art management, and has believed of contemporary art as a sustainable community with a cooperative and creative attitude within the overheated structure of modern society where material production and consumption has been accelerated. Mainly in cooperation with visual artists or curators, Enna Bae developed and carried out concepts and completed exhibitions, festivals, performances, lectures, and publications. It has been already twenty years that she has pondered the attitude of art and life through curating and writing in the contemporary art field.
In addition,
Locus Solus is an imaginary office running as a temporary project of artists, writers, curators and researchers. It would be someone’s agency. It would be someone’s shelter. It would be someone’s waiting room. It would be someone’s study room, too. An imaginary place where you can free of yourself.
By the way,
There was a problem with using the name Locus Solus for my imaginary office where thinking takes place and inspiration stays in this age of information and knowledge. Locus Solus is already used for an artists poetry project in Yvon Lambert Gallery in Paris, and for the studio by Yunchul Kim, a Korean artist.
As a result,
In 2024, I decided to pull out the Imaginary Office which was the subtitle and take it next to Locus Solus. I finally open the door of Enna Bae’s imaginary office, and hope that Locus Solus is a space for who believe the imagination of art and willing to exchange their failures and exchanges.
