배은아의 상상의 사무실에 오신 것을 환영합니다.

[로쿠스 솔루스; 상상의 사무실] 은 프랑스 작가 레이몽 루셀(Raymond Roussel)의 소설 제목에서 시작되었다. ‘Locus Solus’는 라틴어로 ‘외딴(Solus) 곳(Locus)’을 뜻한다.
[로쿠스 솔루스] 는 배은아의 사무실이다. 삶과 예술의 태도를 고민하며 기획과 글쓰기를 해오던 어느날, 스스로 독립이라는 순간을 만들기로 했다. 불문학과 예술경영을 전공하고, 물질적 생산과 소비가 반복되는 과열된 구조 안에서 협력적이고 창의적인 태도로 지속 가능한 공동체로서 현대미술을 꿈꾸며, 예술가들과 큐레이터와 협력하여 개념을 발전시키고 수행한지 어느덧 20년, 꽤 많은 전시와 프로젝트, 페스티벌과 퍼포먼스, 출판과 강연을 완성시켜왔다.

[로쿠스 솔루스] 는 배은아의 기획을 주관하고 지원하는 배은아의 회사로 설립되었다. 이와 동시에 고민에 빠졌다. 익숙한 사무공간이었던 집에서 떨어져 나온다는 것이 회사를 설립하는 것보다 더 어려운 일 인줄이야. 로쿠스 솔루스는 길 건너 집에서 겨우 한 걸음 떨어져 나왔지만 여전히 긴 복도를 통해 집과 연결된 작은 방일 뿐이었다.
내가 자청한 이 외딴곳은 나의 휴식처일까
피난처일까
아니면 유배지일까
어쩌면 이 모두가 아닐지도 모른다.
다시,
[로쿠스 솔루스] 는 통상적인 의미에서의 개인적 공상이 아닌, 문화적 상상력의 공유된 방식에 의해 형성된 ‘상상의 사무실’이 되길 바란다. 에두아르 글리상의 개념에 따라, ‘상상적(imaginary)’이란 한 문화가 세계를 인식하고 사유하는 방식을 의미하며, 이 사무실은 그러한 집단적 인식과 가능성이 교차하고 생성되는 장소가 되길 바란다.
[로쿠스 솔루스] 는 작가, 큐레이터 혹은 연구자들의 상상력과 연대하는 상상의 사무실이다. 누군가의 에이전시일 수도 있겠다. 누군가의 피난처 일 수도 있겠다. 누군가의 휴게소 일 수도 있겠다. 누군가의 공부방 일 수도 있겠다. 스스로 자유로워질 수 있는 어떤 상상의 장소.
그런데,
‘로쿠스 솔루스’라는 상호에 대한 고민이 생겼다. 프랑스 파리의 이본 람베르(Yvon Lambert)가 운영하는 라이브러리의 시 쓰기 프로젝트가 ‘로쿠스 솔루스’라는 이름으로 기획되고 있고, 한국 김윤철 작가의 스튜디오가 ‘스튜디오 로쿠스 솔루스’라는 이름으로 운영되고 있다.
그리하여,
[로쿠스 솔루스] 의 부제였던 ‘상상의 사무실’을 끌어내어 로쿠스 솔루스의 곁에 두기로 했다. 배은아의 상상의 사무실의 문을 열며, 예술의 상상력을 믿고 기꺼이 우리의 실패와 교류가 가능한 [로쿠스 솔루스; 상상의 사무실]이 되길 바란다.

Welcome to Enna Bae’s imaginary office.

Locus Solus; The Imaginary Office finds its origin in Locus Solus, a novel by French writer Raymond Roussel. ‘Locus Solus’ is Latin for a “solitary (Solus) place (Locus).”
Locus Solus is Enna Bae’s office. It has now been 20 years since Enna Bae began curating and writing, constantly reflecting on the attitude one holds toward life and art. With a background in French literature and arts management, Bae reflects on how contemporary art can serve as a sustainable and communal practice within the overheated cycle of production and consumption. She collaborates mainly with visual artists and curators, developing and executing concepts through exhibitions, festivals, performances, lectures, and publications.
Hmm.
Established in June 2022, Locus Solus was faced with a dilemma: leaving home proved far more difficult than founding a company. Though the office had taken only a single step across the street, it was still merely a small room connected to the house by a long hallway.
This solitary place I have chosen—
Is it a place of rest?
A refuge?
An exile?
Perhaps none of these.
Locus Solus is an imaginary office—not in the conventional sense of a private fantasy, but as a space shaped by shared modes of cultural imagination. In the spirit of Édouard Glissant’s concept of the imaginary—as the ways a culture perceives and conceives the world—this office becomes a site of collective perception and potential.
Therefore,
We decided to draw out and emphasize the subtitle—The Imaginary Office—and place it beside Locus Solus. As Enna Bae opens the door to her imaginary office, may Locus Solus become a space that welcomes exchange, embraces failure, and believes—above all—in the imagination that art makes possible.
